The Practical Driving Test

This is the final part you need to qualify and to gain your well-earned Full Driving Licence!

On the day of your test, your instructor will normally take you for a drive around the test area and arrive at the Driving Test Centre about 10 minutes before the test is due to start.

When the Examiner calls you, you will be asked to sign the declaration on the marking sheet that the car is fully insured for use on the Driving Test. On leaving the Test centre, you will be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres (old style plate) or 20.5 metres (new style plate). At the car, you will be asked two vehicle safety questions.

Once on the road, the test will last for about 35 - 40 minutes and will involve driving on a variety of roads. The examiner will be assessing your drive by marking the DL25 marking sheet. You are allowed up to 15 driving (or "minor") faults, although one serious or dangerous fault will result in a fail. During the test, you will be required to perform two reversing manouvres and you may be asked to carry out a controlled (emergency) stop.

At the end of the test, wou will be told the result immediately. Should you fail, the examiner will offer you a debrief  and explain why you haven't passed, (if possible, try to ensure your instructor is present for the debrief) and you will be given a copy of the test marking sheet.

When you pass, the examiner will take your Provisional Licence to send off to the DVLA . Your new Full Licence should arrive in the post within about 10 days. You will be issued with a  Test Pass certificate.  This entitles you to drive on your own!

Just remember - try not to let nerves get the better of you. Millions of people have passed the driving test  - YOU CAN TOO!!
